New York, NY (April 18, 2011) – Financial professionals who use electronic platforms to trade products such as foreign exchange (“FX”) and fixed income (“FI”) are increasing their activity in emerging market products, according to Barclays Capital’s global survey of over 1,300 institutional investors.

The survey found that 57% of FX users and 33% of FI users currently trade emerging markets products – up from 51% and 26%, respectively, in the firm’s 2009 survey. Moreover, in the next 12 to 18 months, 94% of FX users and 97% of FI users expect to trade the same or a higher proportion of emerging market products electronically, signifying that as demand increases for these products, the need for electronic access rises accordingly. On a related note, 74% of FX users said that the most important factor for them and/or their organizations was to have access to streaming emerging market prices across all time zones.

“We have expanded our electronic trading platform, BARX, to meet our clients’ demand for emerging markets products,” said Kevin Rush, Head of Electronic Distribution at Barclays Capital. “BARX currently provides access to emerging markets liquidity in over 50 global currencies and across a comprehensive range of fixed income markets, enabling us to provide our clients with consistent, reliable electronic access in a manner similar to what they have come to expect from the more developed markets.”

“As a testament to our continued effort to provide our clients with the EM solutions they need to stay ahead of the curve, we recently added the ability to trade offshore Renminbi to our BARX FX platform,” said Michael Adams, Head of Emerging Markets Trading.

Other highlights of the survey include:

  • 85% of respondents indicated they are responsible for multiple asset class products, suggesting a move toward cross-asset class trading.
  • In 2008, 47% of the respondents traded more than half of their FX volume electronically. In 2010, that number increased to 68% of the respondents. Similarly, the percentage of respondents that traded more than half of their FI volume electronically increased from 27% to 54% in 2008 and 2010, respectively.
  • In 2006, the average respondent was trading less than 50% electronically across asset classes; in 2010, that number jumped to 77%.
  • 69% of FX users found that “pricing that’s always on” is the most important factor when it comes to G10 spot FX trading.
  • Conversely, “allocation of trades to multiple accounts” was deemed to be one of the least important factors by almost 40% of FX respondents.

The survey was conducted globally throughout December 2010 and January 2011. The respondents were a combination of asset managers, broker-dealers, central bank/government, corporations, hedge funds/CTA, insurers, pension funds, private banks/wealth managers and retail/commercial banks.
